UB-MRIF
(Materials Research Instrument Facility)
Cryogenics Facility of the Materials Research Instrument Facility (MRIF)
The Cryogenics Facility of MRIF provides a centralized distribution center for liquid nitrogen and liquid helium on the North Campus. It plays an important role in the research activities of a number of researchers from the departments of Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Capabilities:
The facility is equipped with a recently acquired Process Systems Model 1410 Helium Liquefier capable of a liquefaction rate of 40 liters/hour. The liquefier is sited on the ground floor of Fronczak Hall which has building-wide helium gas recovery. Liquid nitrogen is distributed centrally from a 12,000 liter storage container, and 7 LS-160 and an LS-220 portable containers.
Instrumentation:
1. Process Systems Model 1410 Helium Liquefier
2. Process Systems Model 50B helium gas recovery compressor.
Charge:
The current charges for liquid helium and liquid nitrogen are $2.84/l and $0.25/l respectively. The liquid helium cost assumes recovery of the gas. For those not recovering helium gas the charge is $5.00/l.
